As speculations trail the 10,000 dollars collected by the embattled APC member of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Saheed Popoola from the former President of the Senate, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, following his recent visit to leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), it has been confirmed that contrary to some reports that the dollars were mere gift, the erstwhile former number three man is recruiting aggrieved APC members in Kwara into his political fold ahead of the 2023 elections.
Last month, Saraki had met with some APC stakeholders in Kwara State in his Lagos home on how to have a seamless political process of easing the incumbent Governor out of power come 2023.
Few weeks after Popoola’s public confession of receiving the dollars from the PDP leader rented the air, suggesting that a meeting was actually held, preparatory to his return to the PDP, Saraki in an exclusive interview said many top APC aggrieved politicians in the coming months would defect to the PDP.
In a telephone conversation with our reporter Senator Bukola Saraki said he met other APC party chieftains who were invited to Lagos on issues that affect Kwara as a whole and not for political reason. “It is a meeting of Kwara leaders of thought,” he said.
Asked if he is preparing grounds to reclaim Kwara in 2023, the ex- President of Senate, was evasive but added that at the appropriate time, his direction would be made known to all Kwarans.
A close ally of Saraki who spoke with our reporter on condition of anonymity said the major issue discussed was centred around funding for the dissident groups and aggrieved APC members, which has now been taken care.
“Of course, we want Saheed Popoola, Gbemisola Saraki, Gobir and some others to return to the PDP. We told them so and they informed us that they would make their decision known very soon, I can assure you that just as they have promised, that decision will be soon. The membership mobilization is part of the talk, on how to sustain their supporters” he added.
“Although, there are few issues surrounding the merger of the aggrieved opposition against the incumbent governor, but Saraki have assured them he will offset the financial debt burden on their necks and present an equitable power sharing formula” the source said.
