FG Suspends Proposed WAEC, NECO Registration Fee Hike

The Federal Government has suspended the proposed increase in registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) conducted by WAEC and the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) organised by NECO. The decision comes after widespread criticism from parents, students, education stakeholders and civil society groups who argued that the planned hike would place an additional financial burden on Nigerian families.

The Federal Ministry of Education announced that it has withdrawn its earlier letter dated June 18, 2026, which conveyed the proposed fee adjustment. According to the ministry, the suspension will allow for a comprehensive review of the proposal and broader consultations with all relevant stakeholders before any final decision is taken.

The ministry acknowledged the concerns and constructive feedback received from Nigerians, stressing that access to quality education remains a priority for the Federal Government. It explained that although rising operational costs had informed the proposed review, the government believes that wider engagement with stakeholders is necessary to arrive at a balanced and acceptable outcome.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, directed that the proposal be placed on hold in line with the government’s commitment to transparent, inclusive and evidence-based policymaking. The ministry said the review process would involve consultations with examination bodies, education experts, parents and other key stakeholders before any changes are considered.

The suspension has been welcomed by many Nigerians, who described it as a positive response to public concerns amid the country’s current economic challenges. Parents and education advocates have urged the government to ensure that any future decision on examination fees takes into account the financial realities facing millions of households while safeguarding the quality and credibility of national examinations.
